Working close to traffic and surrounded by heavy equipment is dangerous. This is, however, the everyday work environment of some people. These include surveyors, road construction employees, and parking attendants, among many others.
One of the important road safety equipment for workers exposed to traffic hazards in Australia is high visibility apparel. The clothing helps distinguish workers from the environment. Simple high-visibility garments have three vital components: retro-reflective bands, combined-performance materials and background material.
Here are the classifications of high-visibility clothing in road construction:
Class 1 Garments
Class one garments should be relatively visible. Their background material should not be less than 217 inches in total area and the retro-reflective band more than 25mm in width. They are ideal for workers in areas where traffic is less than 25mph and there exists adequate separation from traffic. These include parking attendants and workers carrying out maintenance works on sidewalks.
Class 2 Garments
These have a background material of 755 inches with a retro-reflective band of 35mm. Workers use it in areas where traffic exceeds 25mph. These include school crossing guards, rail workers, law enforcement workers directing traffic and airport ground crews.
Class 3 Garments
These are the most conspicuous types of high-visibility clothing. Their background material is 1240 inches with 50mm wide retro-reflective bands. They are used by workers in areas where traffic surpasses 50mph. They are a requirement for survey crews, vehicle operators, road construction workers and emergency responders.
If high-visibility trousers are worn minus high-visibility jackets, the pants are classified as class E apparel. If the pants are worn with class 2 or class 3 clothing, the combination is considered a class 3 ensemble. High-visibility vests are likewise colour coded to avoid confusion. Red is for firefighters whilst blue is for law enforcers. Orange is for DOT officers while green is reserved for emergency responders.
